Testimonials

Ann Paris was a member of Freely Speaking Toastmasters from 1997 – 2000. During that time period she served one year as President of the Club. Ann’s goal during those years was to improve her public speaking skills. She and her husband Randy Cunningham spoke at many churches about their life as a bisexual (Ann) and transman (Randy). After; a long absence, Ann has returned to Freely Speaking to sharpen her skills and enjoy some zoom company during this long pandemic season.

I had known for a while that I wanted to join Toastmasters when I saw what an improvement it had made for a friend. When I moved to Seattle, I didn’t have any friends yet so I decided to give it a shot. Upon meeting FSTM, I instantly felt at home! This group has been a safe and supportive place to build my public speaking and leadership skills, and I have a wonderful mentor to help me along the way. I’m so glad I joined!

As an architect, I need to communicate with many people every day – owners, teammates, consultants, etc. I joined Freely Speaking to learn how to be a better speaker and how to convey ideas more clearly and effectively. Over the years I got much more than just professional growth. All the story sharing with laughter and tears makes it a fun and rewarding experience. More importantly, through the support and comradeship of like-minded Toasties, I have learnt to be an attentive listener, an empathetic partner and overall a better person!

I am a Charter member of Freely Speaking Toastmasters. This means I was one of twenty members when the club formed in 1988. Sometimes people ask if I have already “learned it all.” Participating in Toastmasters can be likened to being an athlete. One has to continue with the “work” to stay in shape. And so I do. I also enjoy mentoring members and listening and learning from our speakers each week.

I started looking at Toastmasters to improve my professional speaking skills. When I visited FSTM, I found a fun group of folks to learn with. I liked the balance between a structured and casual environment. I was surprised to find how Toastmasters made my personal hobby of role-playing games more fun too 🙂
